This is my dream: I stand before the bathroom mirror admiring a new pair of jeans. They fit so well and make me look skinnier; I even have a tushie. I smile at my reflection thinking, I look like a woman, not just a mom!

The reality is I stand before the bathroom mirror wearing a stretched out pair of jeans. It’s not that I don’t care about the latest styles and fashions, but rather the simple fact that often times I have no clue what those are. When I get together with my sisters they frequently point out I’m still wearing the trends from a few years ago. Yes, they have accused me of wearing mommy jeans.

I can imagine buying one of the latest fashions, but I wonder if the style would be compatible with my budget, children, or lifestyle.

I don’t ever want clothing to keep my children at an arms length. Besides, my girls don’t care about my clothes. What my girls want, what they need, is a mama that is willing to get messy with them. They want hugs, kisses, and washable paint spattered on our clothes because we made art! They want to play outside and get dirty making bird nests or mud pies. And I want to be there, fully engaged, with my mommy jeans and all.

Oh but I still dream of the perfect pair of mommy jeans. And I don’t mean frumpy, pleated, or ugly. I mean perfect mommy jeans. Those mommy jeans are out there, right?

You know, the kind that is not too tight and covers it all, because sometimes I have to bend in unnatural ways (and in my case, I do have two kids with special needs, so I do some extra physical work).

The kind that is stain resistant or easy to wipe, because there will be spills, and sometimes changing my clothes is not an option.

The kind that makes me look good, and hides the fact that my skin was stretched by the lovely girls that now have me run hard after them.

The kind that I don’t have to wash after only one wear, because seriously, you should see the piles of laundry that accumulate when you have 2 adults and 3 little girls.

The kind that looks good with a t-shirt or a nicer blouse.

Yes, I want an awesome pair of mommy jeans!

So on the meantime, I put on the pair of jeans that can get dirty, torn, or stained. The one that bears the marks of love, the marks of “mommyhood.” It is my style, these mommy jeans.
